The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks to fill one position

PhD/Postdoc in High-Performance Computing
and Machine Learning

starting May 2023 or later. The full-time position (40 hours per week) is in the Scalable Data- and Compute-intensive Analyses Group (https://scalable.uni-jena.de) and initially limited to three years.

The Scalable Data- and Compute-intensive Analyses Group tackles computationally demanding challenges in research and industry. We cover the involved disciplines from the bare metal of computer architectures to fully automated production workflows by integrating modeling and simulation, high-performance computing, software engineering, data analytics, and verification and validation. This overarching approach is key for building visionary, transferable, robust and efficient software pipelines.

Your responsibilities:

    • Develop efficient software from the machine code level to complex scientific solvers
    • Work on Machine Learning backends and maximize their performance for diverse microarchitectures
    • Harness some of the largest supercomputers in the world and work with emerging and novel hardware
    • Propose end-to-end approaches for simulation and data sciences, and discuss them with partners in academia and industry
    • Share your solutions with the research community through a variety of outlets
    • Support teaching activities in efficient and scalable computing at all levels
    • Contribute to the design of state-of-the-art courses by integrating your own research experiences
    • Work on your scientific qualification, e.g., your doctorate or habilitation

Your profile:

    Required qualifications:

    • Master's / Ph.D. degree in Computational and Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field
    • C / C++ skills and a passion for writing high quality code
    • Experience in programming at the lowest levels (assembly and machine code)
    • Experience in parallel programming and hardware architectures
    • Expertise in the area of numerical algorithms and data analytics
    • Willingness to expand your expertise to new and project-relevant areas
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Willingness to work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment

    Desired qualifications:

    • Experience with Machine Learning / Deep Learning frameworks and libraries
    • Python skills including interfaces to C / C++ or intermediate layers
    • Experience with good software engineering practices
