Project description:
To understand the microbial contribution to the health of individuals and finally of ecosystems, bioinformatics expertise is needed, to digest and combine especially meta-omics data, and elucidate local and global patterns of molecular diversity. In close collaboration with the Soil Biodiversity and Function Taproot led by Nico Eisenhauer and Carlos A. Guerra, which is involved in global and regional initiatives like the Soil Biodiversity Observation Network (SoilBON), LUCAS Soil System Functions, and iSBio, the postdoctoral research will perform an integrative, global assessment of the relationship between microbial diversity and organic matter decomposition in soils obtained from a set of existing monitoring platforms operating along environmental gradients. Furthermore, we want to elucidate microbial responses to severe summer droughts in forest and grassland soils using comparative analyses of existing meta-transcriptomic data sets.

Your responsibilities:

    • Analyses of metagenomic and -transcriptomic data sets of soils microbiomes with a focus of organic matter degradation
    • Integration of molecular data with environmental and geographic data
    • Spending some working time in Leipzig to ensure networking within iDiv
    • Writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
    • Presenting results at national and international conferences

Your profile:

    • Excellent PhD degree in microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or soil sciences
    • Expertise in soil microbiomes and experience in handling meta-omics sequencing and molecular diversity data
    • Skills in bioinformatics and statistics (incl. command line use, a scripting language, and R)
    • Commitment to interdisciplinary research
    • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
    • Team-oriented and strong organizational skills

We offer:

    • Work in a dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary environment in the beautiful city of Jena
    • Opportunities to develop and advance scientific networks
    • Flexible working hours and a family-friendly working environment
    • Participation in our iDiv postdoc career support programme
    • Attractive fringe benefits, e.g. capital formation benefits (VL), Job Ticket (benefits for public transport), and an occupational pension (VBL)
    • Remuneration based on the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector of the Federal States (TV-L) at salary scale E13— depending on the candidate’s personal qualifications—, including a special annual payment in accordance with the collective agreement.

Participating Institutions:
