The Department of English and American Studies is looking to fill the position of

Lecturer and Doctoral Researcher
in English Literature and Cultural Studies

part-time (50%/20 hours per week) with a fixed-term contract for three years and an optional extension to six years.

The department has research interests ranging from the beginnings of English literature in the Anglo-Saxon period to the contemporary Anglophone novel. The specific research interests of the team led by Prof. Dr. Stephan Karschay are scandal and censorship; visual culture; ecocriticism; literature and the scientific imagination in the 19th century; the literature and culture of the Victorian fin de siècle; the Gothic; crime and detection; the history of the Anglophone novel.

Your responsibilities:

    • conducting research in the field of English Literature and Cultural Studies with the goal to obtain a Ph.D. in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies at FSU Jena (under the supervision of Prof. Karschay)
    • independent teaching in English in the field of English Literature and Cultural Studies (currently 2 hours per week during term) in the department’s degree programmes (BA, MA, teacher training)
    • contributing to and supporting the team’s teaching and research output, the organisation of workshops and conferences, and bidding for research grants
    • contributing to the department’s administrative work, especially its MA committee, and the pastoral care of students, including exam invigilation and corrections\

Your profile:

    • you hold a degree (MA or equivalent) in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies or Comparative Literature (with Anglophone components)
    • you can provide a lucid exposé (max. three pages) for a doctoral thesis in English Literature and/or Cultural Studies (points of contact with the team’s research interest are welcome)
    • you have excellent, near-native, English language skills
    • academic work experience with students is a bonus
    • experience with the organisation of national and international projects and events is a bonus

    • Remuneration based on the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector of the Federal States (TV-L) at salary scale E 13— depending on the candidate’s personal qualifications—, including a special annual payment in accordance with the collective agreement.

The advertised position is as a fixed-term position for 3 years.
